Description

Grecian ovolo molding plane comprised of five parts, however only three parts are present. There is a rectangular wooden body (a), a tapered wooden wedge (b), and an iron with a curved blade to match the ovolo profile on the body (c). Missing is a matching wooden wedge and an additional iron. Both sets of wedges and irons would fit together in two separate angled cutouts in the body piece. The present wedge holds the iron in place as the plane runs across the wood surface below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "Z T J" twice. Stamped on the heel is also "Z T J" twice.

History

Ovolo planes are a molding plane used to round the corners of workpieces. The term 'ovolo' refers to the convex quarter-circle shape of the cutting profile. Ovolo planes can be used on their own or in conjunction with other planes to create decorative moldings.
