A wooden block plane comprised of four parts, a wooden coffin-shaped body (a), a rectangular wooden wedge (b), a long rectangular iron with a keyhole shaped cutout in the middle (c), and a second rectangular iron with a small circular hole through the middle (d). The wedge and the two irons fit together inside the plane and the wedge holds the irons in place as the plane runs across the wood surface. Stamped on the toe of the plane ,"GEO. ALLAN/WARRINGTON". Stamped on the iron, "EXTRA CAST STEEL/WARRANTED."

History

Block planes are a variety of smoothing plane. They can be used to remove thin layers of material, or to chisel off thick pieces. They are usually 8 to 12 inches long and the iron is set at a low angle. Block planes are used for cutting following the grain of the wood.
