Description

A wooden jack plane consisting of 3 parts.
a- The body is a rectangular prism made of a dark brown hardwood. A slightly curved handle protrudes from the top body near the heel end. A wide throat cuts diagonally through the body about 1/3 of the length down from the toe. The sole is flat. The stamp reading "W. ROBERTS" is found twice on the toe and once on the heel.
b- The wedge is wide-set and made of the same hardwood as the body. It tapers toward the bottom, then splits into two prongs with flat edges.
c- The cutting iron consists of a primary and secondary iron secured together by a screw. The primary iron is rectangular with chamfered top corners. The bottom edge is flat and sharp. A partially-obscured stamp on the primary iron reads: "G. PEARSON & (obscured)". The width of the cut is 2 1/8".

History

Jack planes are large smoothing planes, often used for preliminary smoothing of wood edges. A more precise tool will be used to finish the piece. This plane’s double irons are slightly convexed to avoid marking the edges of the cut. Jack planes are usually 12-18 inches long, but can be found up to 30 inches.
