A wooden smoothing plane comprised of three parts, a long rectangular wooden body with a wooden knob on top of the plane towards the toe end, and a tall handle on the heel end (a), a wide rectangular wooden wedge (b), and a long rectangular iron made up of two thin pieces of metal held together with a screw (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of an angled cutout in the plane and the wedge holds the iron in place as the plane runs across the wood surface below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "A.MONTY./***/ROXTON POND.P.Q". Stamped on the heel is "I B. Co/S.O", along with the numbers "7", "2", and "1".

History

Smoothing planes are used for the finest finishing work on the wood surface. Before sandpaper was in common use, surfaces such as veneers were not sanded down, but "smoothed" with the smoothing plane. It was essential to set the iron with extreme precision, and to work with the highest degree of skill.
