A large jack plane with a wooden body and handle on the heel, as well as a wooden knob on top of the toe end. There is a metal fixture on the top of the plane extending from the toe of the plane towards the heel under both the front and back handles. In the middle of the plane, a metal iron device goes through an angled hole in the body of the plane which allows the blade to come out of the bottom. The iron device is comprised of multiple pieces of metal held together by a large screw in lieu of a wooden wedge piece. Branded into the front and back of the plane is "CTC CO". Stamped on the toe of the plane is "PAT. 6. 912/BAILEY/STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO/NO 27".
Jack planes are large smoothing planes, often used for preliminary smoothing of wood edges. A more precise tool will be used to finish the piece. This plane’s double irons are slightly convexed to avoid marking the edges of the cut. Jack planes are usually 12-18 inches long, but can be found up to 30 inches.
