A burl mallet made of a single piece of hardwood. The handle is cylindrical with a very slight curve near the head. The head is comprised of a single wood burl. The shape is barely refined but somewhat round. The face is concave as a result of its repeated use.
Mallets are similar to hammers, but have a bigger head made of rubber, wood or brass. The wider head allows for more weight distribution, so they are less likely to mark or damage wood than other hammers are. Mallets are often used for delicate finishing work, or for hitting chisels and other tools.
Burls are naturally-occurring protrusions formed by trees. Trees will form burls when exposed to injury or infection. The wood is highly sought-after because the irregular grain pattern makes it more resilient than regular lumber.
